When you’re having an issue with any internal or external platform, one of the most common troubleshooting suggestions is to clear your cache and cookies. While this may sound like the web equivalent of “try turning it on and off again,” clearing out your cache and cookies is not only a key troubleshooting step but in many cases it will solve your problem altogether!

But what is your cache, and why should you clear it?

Browsers use cookies (files containing user data) placed in your computer’s cache (temporary data storage space) to store website information on your computer, so web pages and components can load quickly. Most platforms and vendors including Google, Microsoft and Vendasta use this ability to deliver the best possible performance for end-users.

To keep things simple... and super fast here are some great ways to clear your cache and cookies.

Browser Guides

Browsers are constantly updating themselves, so to ensure you’re getting the latest information, use the following links to view the current browser-specific methods for clearing your cache and cookies:

Google Chrome

Safari

Mozilla Firefox

Internet Explorer

Microsoft Edge

Opera

Using Extensions

While the methods described at the links above are commonly used, adding an extension can make the process quick and easy. The information below can minimize the hassle of clearing your cache and cookies, as it will only update the cookies for the page you have open at the time. Click the links to download the available extension.

Chrome: Clear Session

This extension retains your data and login information from every web location where you are signed in. This means you won’t have to sign in again to every website after clearing the cache.

You can streamline this extension by setting keyboard shortcuts for actions. To find the extension, go to chrome://extensions/ in Chrome’s address bar to open up the Extensions page. At the very bottom of the page, you'll see a Keyboard Shortcuts option. Add your key combination, and never have to click or deal with a menu again.

Firefox: Clear Site Cache

The Firefox extension is similar to Chrome’s and contains the same functionality.

Internet Explorer

Unfortunately, Internet Explorer does not have an add-on that removes cookies on a per-site basis.

This year, we are ensuring that you are aware of the requirement to have a comprehensive Privacy Policy in place, which can help you avoid privacy-related fines or even lawsuits, so keep reading! Please note: this is not legal advice.

Let’s start with the basics...

1. Your website is collecting personal information

Virtually all modern websites these days are collecting personal information via security, analytics and contact form features and tools.

IP Addresses - Your website utilizes tools that protect your website from cyber-attacks. These tools will collect personal information, such as the website visitor’s IP address, in order to block specific users from trying to perform potentially malicious attacks on your website. You may also be collecting IP addresses for website analytics purposes.

Names, Emails, Phone Numbers - If you have a contact form asking users to submit their contact information, that means you are collecting at least names and emails, possibly more. If you receive an email with contact details whenever someone submits a form, that means you are sharing personal information with third-party email service providers. Sharing data is a completely normal business practice, but specific disclosures may be required to be made within your Privacy Policy.

2. Websites collecting personal information should have a Privacy Policy

Personal information (names, emails, IP addresses, etc.) is regulated under multiple privacy laws such as the Australia Privacy Act. And because your website could be collecting this information from website visitors located anywhere, you may be required by multiple privacy laws to provide a website Privacy Policy that makes specific disclosures required under each law.

3. Privacy laws are changing. You’ll need to keep your Privacy Policy up to date to avoid privacy-related fines and lawsuits.

Governing bodies throughout the world are proposing changes to their privacy laws (including the Australia Privacy Act). When privacy laws change, you may be required to make new disclosures in your Privacy Policy. Therefore, you need to have a strategy to keep your Privacy Policy up to date as laws change and require new disclosures to be made.

Meet Termageddon, the Privacy Policy solution.

Does your website have a privacy policy in place?

Privacy policies are statements, usually on their own page of your website. They document how your business handles and processes the data of its customers and visitors.

As you’re more than likely aware, data privacy is an incredibly important topic to businesses and consumers around the world. People want to know how their data will be used and if the company they’re choosing to work with is being responsible.

When you first get your website online or even when you consider a redesigning https://app.termageddon.com?fp_ref=yourdgtlyour website, it’s really easy to forget about your privacy policy.

Even if you do already have one, it’s also easy to forget to keep it updated. Over the course of doing business, there are many changes that you could make that would affect your privacy policy.

For example, you may use a new payment processor to manage the payments that you receive. You could choose to utilise a new email marketing service. You could even set up analytics on your website.

For all of these options, you’d need to let your visitors know how their data will be used, managed and stored. This is something that goes into your privacy policy.

If you don’t yet have a privacy policy in place take a look at Termageddon - we have a special for our clients, click here for a 10% discount use this Promo Code YOURDGTL

You can sign-up for an account with one of the above services and proceed through a series of steps to create a privacy policy for your business. They’re quite easy to use and each of the companies provides assistance if you have any questions.

The final important thing to note is that many countries have privacy laws that expressly require companies to have privacy policies in place on their websites. This should be an extra incentive to make sure that you have something in place and also that you’re keeping it up to date.

A privacy policy not only brings peace of mind to your website visitors, it also adds trust that you’re a real business and that you care about your customers.

Make sure you have a privacy policy in place for your website and that you review it at least once every few months, just in case it needs updating.
